Commonwealth Games 2010 - Scotland Team

Congratualtions to our UK champion Freya Murray on gaining selection to compete in the 5000m at the Games in Delhi in October. With incredibly tough selection criteria, Freya had to run two performances at sub 15:35 to gain selection - a task she achieved!

Wednesday 11th August

In the 800m's, Anna Fawcett finished 3rd in the U15 girls with a time of 2:28.55 whilst Callum Morgan ran 2:07.72 in the U17 mens race. Claire Simpson won the 3000m with a time of 10:01.24 and Angela Hunter was 3rd with 10:44.7.

Northern Steeplechase Champs, Stretford. Tuesday 10th August
Emma Raven comfortably won the Northern Athletics 2000m Steeplechase Championships in 6:42, following a two-week seasons break.

In the final match of the series, our growing and fast improving squad of U12 athletes competed well bringing home a superb collection of 5 gold, 3 silver and 9 bronze medals and 6 overall trophies (from the 5-event grand prix).

Cailtin Llewellyn was the top point scorer of the day in the U9's winning two bronze medals in the 50m sprint and the 400m, and with a tremendous throw of 15.59m in the howler, a gold!

Nathan Fawcett topped the results table in the U10's with Sam Overal in 3rd place. Together with Joe Halpin, the boys performed well with Nathan finishing third in the 50m with a time of 8.1 seconds, and Joe just behind with a time of 8.9seconds. Nathan won the howler with a throw of 32.25m and also won the 400m with an impressive time of 70seconds whilst Sam took bronze in 74 seconds.
In the competitive U10 girls competition Emily Corless claimed the third overall spot with a joint 3rd place finish in the 50m with a time of 8.1seconds and a gold in the standing longjump with 1.74m. Struggling with an injury, Rebecca Wood bravely competed and finished just 3points ahead of club mate Amy Jack in the overall standings. With Rebecca finishing just ahead of Amy in the sprint, long jump and 400m, Amy unleashed a 15.65m howler throw to take a well deserved bronze medal, just 30cm further than Emily.

In the U11 boys, our trio of Kieran Pinkney, Corey Bell and Owen King finished in 1st, 5th and 7th on the day with Kieran throwing an impressive 36.97m in the howler, Corey racing to equal 5th in the 75m with 11.9(just behind Kieran) and Owen showing talent for the longer distances with a 3rd place run in the 600m (with 2:13) just behind Kieran who won in 2.01.

Olivia Nelson and Jessica Parker battled it out for 3rd and 4th in the U11 girls with Olivia picking up two bronze medals for the 75m and long jump and Jessica claiming the bronze in the howler only 1cm short of the silver medal. New athlete Abbie Dinsdale made her debut for the club and ran in the 75m and threw the howler.
Our sole U12 athlete, Beth Brown battled hard all the way to the finish line in the 600m running 2mins 30.

Grand Prix Points

After collecting points (like decathlon points scoring) in each of the 5-matches, Sam Overal came out on top in the U10 boys competition with a total of 1008, with clubmate Nathan Fawcett collecting the third placed trophy. Caitlin Llewelln also finished 3rd in the U9's, a superb achievement as these points were accumulated from only 3 of the 5 events. Emily Corless won a trophy for 4th place in the U10 girls whilst Rebecca Wood just missed out finishing in 6th. In the U11 age group, Tom Cowperthaite who missed the final match finished 3rd overall whilst Olivia Nelson collected the 4th place prize. Jessica Parker also came close to a trophy finishing only 10 points behind the 5th place girl.

In total over the whole series, the squad collected 17 gold, 23 silver and 23 bronze medals, a total 63 medals. The following 28th athletes competed including:

Maxine Czarnecka led the ClS contingent home as 2nd placed female with a solid performance of 36:00, her 2nd fastest ever. Tracy Laws was next home in 36:30, lacking the longer endurance after a summer concentrating on the track. David McGuckin led the men's team home in 40:07 (86th) winning his age-group. He was backed up by Keith Robershaw in 128th (41:19), Robert Brannon in 344th (47.06) and coach Joe Elsender in 1:09.04.

NE Harrier League, Jarrow

Th club had four athletes racing against the clock in the 1500m. First year U15 Anna Fawcett won her age-group in a time of 5.00.4, once again coming agonisingly close to breaking 5mins for the first time. Thomas Goulding was also close to his PB in the boys race where he finished 6th in 4:41.0. PB success did come for Callum Morgan who removed another second from his PB recording 4:21.6 when finishing 4th in the U17 competition. Angela Hunter finished 2nd in the senior women's event running 4:59.8.

On the in-field, Mia Hodgson won the high jump with a clearance of 1.50m which was only 1cm short of equalling her PB.

NE Road 5km Champs

Silksworth, Sunderland, 21st July

First home in 20th position was Matty Tomlison recording 16:43 followed by Stewy Bell in 17:05. Claire Simpson led the Chester ladies home finishing 3rd female overall with a time of 17:32. Maxine Czarnecha followed her in shortly after in 4th place with 17:29 and Angela Hunter completed the team in 6th place in a time of 18:32. (There are currently no results avaialbe past 100)

Meanwhile, Emma Raven ran a new PB (and Scottish Native Record) of 10:05 in the 3000m steeplechase, removing 4 seconds from her best. She suffered an unfortunate fall at the first waterjump due to poor lighting (10pm at night) and torrential rain but battled hard lapping the entire field twice.

Scottish and English Champs and Commonwealth Trials

17-18th July

Scottish, Pitreavie: Freya Murray and Emma Raven picked up two gold and one silver medal over the wet and windy weekend in Fife. On the Saturday, Emma won the steeplechase in a time of 10:13 before finishing 2nd behind Freya in the 5000 on the Sunday. Whilst Freya ran off from the gun and essentially tempo ran round to victory in 16:29.11, Emma opted for a tactical race sitting in and comfortably running behind the eventual 3rd placed athlete until the bell before posting a 70sec last lap to take silver in 17:16.

English, Gateshead: The solo Chester competitor was Tracy Laws who was making her debut at a major national champs. Tracy finished in 10th place in the 5000m with a time of 17:25; gaining valuable experience of championship running and like the Scots, battling the wind.

In torrential downpours, a small contingent of athletes competed with a few grabbing PB's. Finishing 2nd in the U13 800m, Henry Johnson ran 2:20.8 whilst Joe Armstrong raced to a time of 2:32.8. Tom Goulding equalled his PB recording 2:18.4 in the U15 boys 800m and U17 Callum Morgan ran 2:10.1. In the 3000m, four senior women took on the conditions with Tracy Laws coming home in 1st place (10.04.1) and helping pull Maxine Czarnecha to a tiny PB of 10.06.0. Max was 3rd, just behind Gatesheads Mary Ferrier. Next home was Angela Hunter in 10:47.8 and recording a good PB of 11:35.4 in 5th place was Lisa Tweddle.

Angel View Run, Low Fell: 8th July: Darren Purvis finished in 2nd place with a time of 26:46 for the multi-terrain race whilst Sharron Parr was first in her W55 age-group.

Tynedale 10km, 7th July: Heather Robinson finished 10th overall and first in her age-group running a time of 42.06.

Anita Knott Womens 5km, Newcastle, 5th July: Claire Simpson finished in 3rd place with a time of 20:12.

Flanders Cup, Brasschaat, Belgium, 11th July: Freya Murray was pushed to a new PB in the 5000m by a Japanese athlete who won the international race as Freya finished 2nd. Her time of 15:31.17 was under the commonwealth standard set by Scottish Athletics.

English Schools, 10th July, Gateshead: Mia Hodgson represented Durham schools and finished 7th in the final of the junior girls 75m hurdles. Her time of 11.63 in the final followed an 11.66 and 2nd place in her heat – both equalling her hand-timed PB of 11.6 set at the Durham Schools in June, the race she won to qualify for the ESSA championships.

BMC Solihull, 10th July: Emma Raven took almost 4 seconds from her PB (which was recorded at the same meeting last year) whilst winning the 1500m B race in 4.22.65.

Sunshine Run, 7th July, Newcastle: Angela Hunter finished an excellent 2nd overall and 1st female over the 5km race along the Quayside. Her time was 19.06.

North East Combined Events, 27th June, Hull

Our four multi-event athletes produced numerous PB performances across a range of disciplines. The only medal of the weekend was awarded to Joey Williams in the U17 men’s octathlon who finished with a points score of 4005 to edge ahead of team mate Ryan King who was 4th with 3936. Both lads battled hard against each other and the other competitors. Joey was consistent across all the events, with a 2nd place perfofrmance in the 100m hurdles and 3rd best results in the 1500, shot, discus and javelin showing great versatility. He picked up PB’s in the throwing events ands the 1500m (4.56.8). Key performances from Ryan were PB’s and 1st places in the long and high jump (6.34m and 1.72) and PB’s in the 400m (53.1), the throws and at the end of the day, in the 1500m (5.07mins).

In the U15 pentathlon competition, Sam Tyrell finished 4th overall with 2603points obtaining a superb four new PB’s in the process. These included a winning jump of 5.71m in the long jump, 12.2 in the 80m hurdles, 10:14 in the shot putt and an impressive 2.21.1 in the 800m. In the girls event, Mia Hodgson was 5th with a PB points score of 2547 but like Sam, also produced some excellent performances and grabbed a couple of PB’s. She won the 75m hurdles in 11.8, jumped a PB of 4.95m in the long jump and threw a new PB of 6.43m in the shot putt.

A handful of our senior men were in action with Darren Purvis finishing in 3rd place (36.06mins), Matty Tomlinson in 9th (37.01) and Keith Robertshaw in 15th (38.12). Matty was 3rd M40 and Keith 1st M45.

AVIVA UK Championships and Euro Trials

Birmingham, 26th-27th July

On the hottest day of the year despite a moderate breeze, fast times for our endurance athletes were always going to be hard. But Freya Murray set out with confident ambition and in an impressive gun to tape victory, to defend her 2009 title and win the 2010 5000m in a time of 15:48.75. Meanwhile, Emma Raven improved from 6th position in 2009 to finish 4th in the 3000m steeplechase. Emma's time also suffered under the testing conditions but with 10:13 was her 2nd fastest ever and was almost 20 seconds faster than last year.

The previous day saw disappointment for Aly Dixon in the 10,000m as she was forced to withdraw after about 4km suffering from a funny turn (including light-headedness and palpitations). Poor Aly ended up in hospital but has since recovered and will no doubt bounce back quickly.

16th June: Penshaw Hill Race. James Raven finished 3rd with a time of 17:13 for the 3mile, 26seconds behind winner Brian Rushworth.

20th June: Newton Aycliffe 10km. James Raven finished in 5th place recording a time of 34:02 for the undulating course whilst David McGuckin finished in 51st position in 41:20 and picked up the 1st over 60 prize.

20th June: Emma Raven ran a seasons best of 4:30.15 when winning the 1500m at the Scottish Athletics Women's League match at Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh.

23rd June: New Marske 5km. Maxine Czarnecha finished in 3rd place female with a time of 17:46, just 4 seconds behind 2nd place. She was 9th in the overall age and sex-graded rankings.

Minor Young Athletes Meeting, 13th June

The U11 section of the club collected a fantastic 15 medals (3 gold, 6 silver and 6 bronze) at the Minor Athletics Meeting. Nathan Fawcett and Ellie Heydon were the top performers. Nathan won the 400m and the howler*, was 2nd in the 50m and picked up a bronze medal in the standing long jump. Ellie collected a medal of each colour with gold in the howler, silver in the 75m and bronze in the long jump. Silver medals were also collected by Christina Elsdon in the 50m, Oliver Barrett in the 400m which he added to his bronze in the howler, Tom Cowperthwaite in the 600m and Emily Corless in the standing long jump. Caitlin Llewellyn (howler), Jonny Langley (400m) and Lucy Elsdon (75m) all won bronze medals. Although not winning medals on this occasion a further 12 athletes took part including Olivia Nelson, Beth Brown, Jessica Parker, Olivia Campbell, Lauren Beanland, Joe Halpen, Jarryd Purvis, Rebecca Wood, Amy Jack, James Hunter, Owen King and Bethany Lee. Well done to all!

*the howler is a throwing event where athletes throw a small American football with flying fins and importantly, a whistling hole that makes it howl!

Redcar Half Marathon, 13th June

Congratualtions to Keith Robershaw who ran a new PB of 76:59 for the Redcar Half. He finished 18th overall and 3rd in his age-category taking 16 seconds from his previous best time.

Junior Athletics League, Jarrow, 20th June

Once again our Juniors produced a fine set of results with a whole host of wins, and many PB’s across all age-groups and events. The results of those athletes achieving the UKA standards are mentioned. U15 athletes Sam Tyrell and Mia Hodgson led the way with 3 winning performances each. Mia won the 75m hurdles (12.0, grade 1), long jump (4.65m, grade 3) and high jump (1.48m, grade 3) whilst Sam won the 80m hurdles (12.3, grade 2), high jump (1.55m, grade 4) and long jump (5.53m, grade 3). U13 Jane Feeman picked up excellent points with wins and grade 4 performances in the 70m hurdles (13.2) and a clearance of 1.23m in the high jump. In the 100m hurdles, Joey Williams and Ryan King (both U17) took 1st and 2nd with grade 4 times of 15.2 and 15.4 respectively. Joey also ran a graded time of 53.4 in the 400m. In the sprints, Anna Smith won the U15 girls 100 and 200 in 13.5 and 27.5 (both grade 4) whilst Jason Rumney ran a grade 4 14.1 in the U13 boys 100m.

In the endurance races, Chris Peverley obtained a grade 3 in the U15 1500m with 4:33.3 and the following athletes all obtained grade 4 standards: Chloe Liddle (U13 800, 2.41.1); Anna Fawcett (U15 800, 2.28.3); Joe Armstrong (U13 800, 2.30.7); David Harris (U17 1500m, 5.08.5) and Callum Morgan (U17 3000, 9:49.9).

Two further notable field performances came from Katie Savoury with a jump of 3.90m in the U13 long jump and U15 Sophie Hindhaugh with a 8.38m shot putt. Both girls obtained grade 4 standards.

On a warm but windy night, four of the clubs top middle distance juniors were in action. Taking a huge 6 seconds from his PB, Tom Goulding finished 4th in the U15 1500m recording 4:38.6. Also running1500m, Anna Fawcett (U15) and Henry Johnson (U13) were both just outside of their PB's but Anna was rewarded with a win in 5:01.5, whilst Henry finished 2nd in 4:55.01. Tackling the rarely run mile, Callum Morgan produced a fine performance to finish in 2nd place with 4:44.45.

Blaydon Races, 9th June

The annual Blaydon Races is a highly anticipated fixture in the NE athletics calendar and the club's turn out this year was superb. In the ladies, Aly Dixon finished an impressive 2nd, only 9seconds behind winner Justina Heslop. Tracy Laws was next female home collecting the first local prize when finishing 5th and together with Claire Simpson in 9th and Angela Hunter in 12th, the girls look to have easily won the first team prize. Vet athlete Heather Robinson was a little further back but looked strong over the last mile - we need to wait for the full results to be published to find out how Heather did in her age group.

Darren Purvis led the men home in 18th position and was quickly followed by James Raven in 20th who worked well with Aly through the second half of the race. Next home in 42nd place was Matty Tomlison with Keith Robershaw just sneaking into the top 50. Although no results are available, Stewy Bell, Richard Ellis also ran and I am sure a few others will pop up in the results.

Endurance Track Races, 12-13th June

BMC Watford, 12th June

Freya Murray and Emma Raven made the long journey to Watford to compete in the two longest events of the night at the 2nd British Milers Club Grand Prix of the season. Whilst Emma raced to a new PB of 10:09 when finishing 3rd in the 3000m steeplechase, Freya was not her usual self and finished 4th in 15:45.9 in the 5000m.

Northern Athletics Senior Track and Field Championships, 13th June

Chester duo, Emma Raven and Tracy Laws won the gold and bronze medals in two new PB's at Sportcity in Manchester. After a conservative start, Emma took 26seconds off her best finishing in 16:43 whilst Tracy took a further 9seconds from her time earlier this year to lower her PB to 17:08.

Dumferline Half, 13th June

Angela Hibbs made her England debut over the testing hilly course in Dumferline in wet conditions. She finished 7th in a time of 80mins exactly. Rebecca Robinson won in 74:48mins and with Angela's help, England won the combined mens/womens team prize.

National Sprint Triatlon Champs

Lisa Tweddle finished 7th in the 20-24 year age-category in the National Sprint Triathlon Champs in Milton Keynes. She was 2nd on the swim (750m in 11.16), completed the 20km bike in 35.40 and ran 22.14 for the 5.3k run recording an overall time of 1hr 11 mins 21seconds. Lisa was slightly disappointed with the result as she finished only 1min 23secs away from bronze, which she attributes to a below par bike.

Seniors: Euro Cup and T&F League Matches

Freya Murray returned from Boulder to make her season's debut for GB in the European Cup 10,000 in France. Freya ran an impressive PB of 32:23 to finish 6th and first Brit.

Four of our senior women were racing for alternative clubs under a "higher claim competition club" status to enable them to compete in the UK track leagues. In the Northern League match at Whitley Bay, Tracy Laws (representing Birtley) won the 800 by a large margin recording a new PB of 2:19.5 and finished 4th in the 400m in 63.3. Angela Hunter was 2nd in the 1500m in 4:53.8 and Claire Simpson won the 3000m in 10:26. Angela and Claire were representing Jarrow and Heburn. On the Sunday, Emma Raven, representing Thames Valley Harriers, won both her events recording a new PB of 9:31 in the 3km and clocking 4:39 in a tactical 1500m.

The top performing female athletes, winning their events, were U11 Ellie Hayden in the shot putt with a throw of 4.33m and U13 Jane Feenan who cleared 1.23m in the high jump.

The boys winners included U11 athletes Nathan Fawcett who ran 2:47 in the 800m and Tom Cowperthwaite who jumped 1.05m in the high jump whilst U13 Ross Trotter won the long jump with 4.05m. In the U15 age-group, talented Nathan Purvis won three events including the 100m (13.4), the shot putt (8.32m) and the long jump (5.13m); Steven Ketley won the 200 and 400ms with 26.8 and 58.9 seconds and Sam Turnbull threw a winning 29.26m in the javelin. The sole U17 winner was David Harris who won the 1500m in 5:08 whilst in the U20’s Scott Markwell won four events including the 100m (12.5), 200m (24.0), long jump (5.69m) and the shot putt (7.70m).

Alongside these winners, there were notable performances by Rob Peverley (U13) who was 2nd and 3rd in 1500 and shot respectively and three under U11 athletes: Rebecca Wood (2nd in the 800), Olivia Nelson (2nd in the high jump) and Emily Carless (2nd in the long jump).

Northern Athletics U15 Championships, 30th May

Congratulations to Mia Hodgson who won the bronze medal at the Northern Champs in the 75m hurdles with a superb new PB of 11:82secs. Chris Peverley was also in action and finished 5th in a competitive 3000m. Chris’ time of 9:58 was encouragingly only 10-seconds behind the winner.

Harrier League Track and Field, Jarrow, 26th May

Taking advantage of the calm evening, several of Chester’s athletes participated in the second NE harrier league fixture and several PB’s were broken. Mia Hodgson won the high jump with 1m45 and was 3rd in the shot with 5m92, a throw that was just 2cm short of her PB. In the 800’s Joe Armstrong (U13) and Tom Goulding (U15) were both 4th and both recorded new PB’s. Joe ran 2.32.0 and Tom broke the 2:20 mark recording 2:18.4. In the seeded races, Callum Morgan took 2 seconds of his lifetime best time finishing in a new PB of 2:06.4 whilst James Raven rewrote his PB by 8 seconds, 15years after it was set with a 2:10.7 performance. Finally, representing the ladies, Amy Bell make a welcome return to the track with a solid 2:36.3 to finish 5th.

Parkrun and Inter-counties T&F, 29-30th May

James Raven recorded another PB over 5km winning the Middlesbrough Parkrun in 16:19 whilst Angela Hunter finished first female in the Sunderland race in 18:58. The following day, Tracy Laws made the long trip to Bedford to compete for the North East in the Inter-counties 5000m. With strong winds and a tactically slow start, her time was a below par 17:43 but she raced hard for the bronze medal.

Young Athletes League, Doncaster

There were wins across all ages and events with top performances by double winners Joey Williams (U17), Abby Clamp (U15) and Chris Peverly (U15). Joey won both the 100m hurdles (15.4 and grade 4) ann the long jump (5.80m), Abby took first place in the 100m (13.7secs) and the long jump (3.83m) and Chris won the 1500m (4:40m and grade 4) and the javelin (19.9m). Sam Tyrnell and Anna Fawcett obtained grade 3 standards when winning their events which were the U15 80mH (12.8) and the U15 1500m (5:03.2) respectivley. Grade 4 standards were reached by U13 athletes: Jane Feeman won the high jump with a 1.20m clearance, Jason Rumsby ran 14.0 to win the 100m and Katie Savory jumped a winning 3.81m in the long jump. Our other three winners were Jason Clarke (U17 TJ: 12.02m), Ryan Gambol (U17 300om: 9.59.7) and Chloe Liddle (U13 800m: 2:48.5). Two further notable performances included Joe Armstrong and Sam Tyrnell who both finished 2nd in their events but recorded graded standards. Joe ran 2:33.1 in the 800m obtaining a grade 4 and Sam cleared 1.60m in the U15 high jump; a grade 3 height.

Lisa won the Newcastle Parkrun in a superb time of 20:11 removing 15 seconds from her previous best whilst Emma took 7 seconds off her 3km chase PB when winning the Loughborough International (pictured at the front).

Callum Morgan shaved another second off his PB when finishing 4th in the B race and 4th fastest U17 with a time of 4:22.9! In the C race, Henry Johnson also ran an impressive PB taking 8seconds from his best set last week to record 4:53.3. Pier to Pier and Tees Pride 5km Road Races

Claire Simpson continued her comeback with an impressive win in the Sunderland Pier to Pier 7 mile race. Claire’s time of 43:23 was 3 mins faster than the next female. Matty Tomlison also competed recording a time of 40:23 when finishing in 9th place.

Further south along the coast, our Chester girls were easily the first team home at the Middlesbrough Tees Pride 5km. Angela Hibbs finished 2nd in a respectable 17:25, only 10seconds away from the winner, Maxine Czarnecha was 4th in 17:59 and Angela Hunter finished in 6th place with 18:38.

Derbyshire County Track and Field Champs

Running for his 1st claim club Cardiff, James Raven won the Derby County 5000m and despite the strong winds and wet conditions, recorded a PB time of 16:36.9. James finished about 100m ahead of the silver and bronze medalists who placed ahead of him in the same event last year.

The top track performance from the girls came from Mia Hodgson who recorded a Grade 1 performance when winning the U15 100m in a PB time of 12.8; a time that places her 16th on the UK rankings for this year. Mia also achieved two Grade 3’s in the 75m hurdles which she won in 12.4 and in the high jump with 1:58m. Anna Smith finished 2nd to Mia in the 100m in a time of 13.4 which was a Grade 4 performance but won the long jump with 3.88m and together with Abby Clamp in 3rd, was 2nd in the 200m (28.3 and 29.4). U13 Daniel Pickering was the club’s top male athlete showing great versatility by winning the 800m in 2.26.3 (Grade 2), the 200m in a Grade 4 time of 28.4 and the long jump with 4.06m. Chris Peverley ran a solid 4:38.6 to win the U15 boys 1500m and obtain a Grade 4 standard, and Chris also picked up useful league points in the shot and javelin. Jayne Feeham jumped an impressive Grade 2 performance of 3:80m in the U13 LJ. Jayne also finished 3rd in both the high jump clearing 1m 10cm and the 75m with 11.4.

Other outstanding performances came from Caitlin Smith who won an impressive U17 sprint triple with 13.4 in the 100, 29.1 in the 200m and 49.6 in the 300m whilst Nathan Purvis won the U15 100m (13.0), 200m (26.9) and the long jump (4.87m). There were wins for Peter Bradley in the U17 200m (27.5) (Peter was also 2nd in the 100m in 13.4 and the shot 6.12m), Joey Williams in the U17 110m hurdles (16.1), Andrew Sill in the U15 800m (2:35.8) alongside a 3rd place in the 200m and 2nd place in the discus (11.37m), Ryan Gamble in the 3km (9.58:2) and the U17 shot putt with a throw of 6:80m and Katie Blackett with a triple jump win of 7m58. Katie also picked up valuable points finishing 2nd and 3rd in the U17 300 and 800 with 50.6 and 2:35.1. Finally, Katie Gun (U13) won the shot putt with 3.74m before finishing the 800m in 3:12.4.

Also well done to Robert Peverley for solid performances in the U13 100 (3rd - 17:00), 1500m (2nd - 5.44.2) and shot (2nd – 5:56m); U13 Imogen Hope who was an excellent 2nd in both the 150 (23.4) and 800m (2.54); David Harris (U17) for his 2:35.1 in the 800m; Glen Duffield and Jack Williams who were 1st and 2nd in the U17 javelin with throws of 23:10 and 10:65m respectively. Finally, Katie Savory who worked well for the team in the 75m and 150m recording times of 12.1 and 25.0 and also in the long jump with a solid 3.48m.

North East Track and Field Championships 2010

8th-9th May 2010, Gateshead International Stadium

With 19 Chester-le-Street Athletes competing over the weekend, the club collected an impressive 20 medals – 8 Gold, 4 Silver and 8 Bronze, and 1 CBP. By the end of the weekend, Daniel Pickering was the most decorated athlete collecting an outstanding five medals. Joey Williams picked up four medals and Mia Hodgson and Henry Johnson picked up three each. Tracy Laws collected a distance double gold and Emma Raven smashed the Championship Best Performance. Whilst many of the medalist ran PB times, there were also some superb performances and PBs across all the events and ages in conditions that were far from ideal at times, particularly on Saturday. Congratulations to all!

U13: Daniel Pickering and Henry Johnson were spotted pulling Bolt style poses on the podium throughout the weekend with the pair winning 8 medals between them. Their closest race was the 200m with Dan edging out Henry by just 2 hundredths of a second and the boys taking 1st and 2nd with 28:28 and 28:30. They also took gold and silver in the 1500m with Dan running 4:55 and Henry a PB of 5:01. Joe Armstrong and Robert Peverley supported the pair well with Joe finishing 4th taking 7 seconds from his PB in 5:09 and Robert running 5.48.7 finished 8th. The tables were turned in the 800m with Henry first home in second place recording a superb PB of 2.19.88 which was a grade 1 AAA’s standard. Dan was 3rd in 2:27 and Robert joined to pair in the final to finish 8th in 2:50. Dan won a further two medals in the 100m (bronze: 13:68) and long jump (silver: 4.26m) whilst Robert just missed out on a medal in the shot putt throwing 5.60m to take 4th. Our sole female U13, Charlotte Cummings competed well in the long jump finishing 5th with 3:53m.

U15: In the U15 age-group the attention turned to the sprints and jumps with Mia Hodgson and Anna Smith recording several notable performances. Mia won the high jump with 1m 50 which was a grade 2 standard and the 75m hurdles in 11.9secs (grade 1) and collected a bronze in the 100m with 13.0. Anna was 6th in a close 100m final with 13.3 and although finishing 4th, jumped a lifetime best of 4:33m in the long jump which was 5cm further than 5th placed athlete Mia. Chris Peverley collected a bronze in the boys breezy 3000m recording 9:54, just outside of his PB. Chris also battled hard in the 1500m finishing 4th in 4:36 whilst Thomas Goulding ran a 1 second PB finishing 7th in 4:44.6. Both these performances were AAA’s grade 4 standard. Tom also ran 2:21.2 in the 800m heats. Having just stepped up into the age group, Anna Fawcett had to settle with 3rd and 4th places in the 800 and 1500m respectively but secured impressive PB’s in both events. She took 9 seconds from her 1500m time recording 5:00.1 and 2 seconds from her 800 best recording 2:26. Both times were grade 3 standard.

U17/U20: Multi-eventer Joey Williams had a busy and successful championships winning the 100m hurdles in 15.46 and collecting bronze in shot (9.25m) on the Saturday, before picking up another gold and bronze on the Sunday in the long jump (1st in 6.08m and grade 2) and the high jump (3rd with 1.60m). In the distance events, Callum Morgan continued to chip away at his PB’s taking another second off his 1500m time, finishing 10th in 4:23.9 and recording 2:08.6 in the heats of the 800m. Meanwhile Katie Blackett finished a promising 5th in the U17 800m recording 2:38.4. Caitlin Smith ran a creditable 13.51 in the 100m heats to gain her place in the final where she finished with a time of 13:65. Finally, U20 athletes Scott Markwell and Owen McArdle both ran new PB’s in the 200m with Scott recording 24.11 in the heats and Owen 23.48 when finishing 6th in the final. Owen also set a PB in the 400m finishing in 5th place with 53.51.

Seniors: Our senior endurance trio also left their mark on the championships with Tracy Laws winning both the 5000m on the Saturday and the 1500m on the Sunday. Tracy ran two huge PB’s taking 27 secs of her 5km best in an impressive solo run recording 17:17 before running 4:38 in the 1500m; 4 seconds faster than her previous best. Both times were grade 3 standard. Angela Hunter just missed out on a medal in the 1500m but ran a strong and confident race removing 9 seconds from her seasons best set two weeks ago recording 4:51. Finally, Emma Raven set a new PB and a Championship Best Performance in the 2km steeplechase removing 64 seconds from the old best set in 2000. Her 6mins 36 was a grade 1 AAA’s standard.

Cleveland Sprint Triathlon, 9th May

Triathlete Lisa Tweddle won the sprint distance tri in Stokesley by an impressive 1min 25secs recording the fastest swim time of the day (6.31 for 400m), the 4th fastest bike (34:52 for 20km) and the fastest run with 20:57 for the 5km. Whilst leading the women home, Lisa also finished in 23rd overall, easily inside the top 5th of all competitors.

May Bank Holiday Weekend

On the Saturday, Tracy Laws, running for Birtley AC in the Northern T&F league in Carlisle, recorded a huge 20-second PB in the 3000m, which she easily won in 10:03:06. Maxine Czarnecha won the undulating Kirbymoorside 10km in 36:50 on the Sunday whilst Freya Murray finished 7th in the high-profile BUPA Edinburgh 10km with 33:35 following her sisters wedding, where Freya was bridesmaid. Finally, on the Monday, Sam and Katie Blackett finished 54th and 67th in the Jesmond Dene Handicap.

Gordon Smith Relay - Wallsend

The Chester-le-Street women won this 3 x 2 mile relay for the 5th consecutive year. This year saw the trio of Angela Hunter, Sarah Wilkinson and Claire Simpson winning in a record time of 33:11, 3 mins ahead of the second team, Elswick. Angela led the ladies to a fantastic first leg, beating her time from last year by just under a minute, and recording the fastest senior time of the day with 11:03. Sarah took over on 2nd leg, recording the same time as Angela to gain the fastest vet's prize. Claire finished the race off, producing again a great run to finish in 11th position over all. She too was faster than her time of last year with 11:05.

NE Harrier League T&F, Jarrow

It was a busy night for ClS athletes at the first of the summer T&F league series. Competing into a stiff headwind, Jack Peters ran 19.3 to finish 2nd in the U13 boys 100m, U15 Anna Smith ran 14.5 finishing 6th and Mia Hodgson won the sprint hurdles in 12.5 and also the high jump in 1.40 m. Our trio of U13 middle distance runners tackled the 1500m with Henry Johnson taking 2nd place in 5:10, Joe Armstrong in 3rd (5:17.4) and Robert Peverley in 7th (5:40.5). Robert also threw an excellent 6.02m in the shot putt recording maximum points for the league.

Chris Peverley continued his PB streak by knocking 7 seconds from his 1500m PB when finishing 4th in the U15 boys race in 4:33.6 whilst Tom Goulding broke the 5 min barrier for the first time recording a new PB of 4:58.8. Just days before her 13th birthday, Anna Fawcett ran a strong last 200m to finish 4th in the U15 girls 1500m in 5:14.0.

Finally, in the mixed, seeded 1500m races, Callum Morgan (U17) was first home in 4:25.1, taking 3rd place in the 2nd fastest race. This shaved 0.1 secs from his PB set last week. James Raven took 9 seconds off his PB to finish 3rd senior man in 4:29.0 and more importantly beat his wife, Emma who recorded 4:30.7 finishing first female ahead of 2nd senior lady Angela Hunter who was racing her first 1500m in four years.

Blyth 10km

London Marathon and Mini-Marathon

London Marathon

Running in the 30th London Marathon, Aly Dixon (right - photo by Phil Townsend) made her marathon debut from the elite women’s start and finished in 27th position with 2:43:48 (1:18:06 through half-way). A superb time even if she is a bit disappointed with it. Running with the masses, Keith Robershaw, Nigel Brown and Darren Purvis all recorded suberb new PB’s and were joinged by Phil Coulson and Peter Miller! Darren was first home to complete at least his eighth consecutive London in 2:37:50 (1:17:51 to half) knocking 5 seconds off his best. He was followed home by Phil recording 2:40:31 (1:19.20 to half) who just got the better of Keith whose time of 2:40:45 was a minute faster than last year (half-way in 1:19:01). Nigel followed shortly and took 3 minutes from his previous best set on the fast (slightly downhill) Edinburgh course last year. He recorded 3:01:00 (1:86:16 to halfway). And finally cruising under the 4-hour mark Peter ran 3:56:38.

Mini Marathon
Representing the North East, five of our young athletes were also pounding the streets of London covering the last 3-miles of the route. In the 11-12 year old age group, Henry Johnson led the Chester boys home in 27th and 18:25 and was followed by Joe Armstrong and Daniel Pickering who were 41st and 43rd and separated by 4 seconds with 18:54 and 18:58. In the girls race, Anna Fawcett finished 2nd NE athlete and 24th overall in 19:35 and in the age-group above, Chris Peverley finished an excellent 34th in 17:08.

Weekend Action 18th-19th April

Juniors
There was an excellent turn out by the club at one of the first track events of the season, the Anne Marie Memorial Meeting at Shildon.

In the sprints, U11 Scott Armstrong won both the sprint events with 23:50 in the 150m and 9:40 in the 60m and Katie Savory was 4th in the U11 60m final. In the U13 sprints, Henry Johnson won the 200m in 29:00, Daniel Jukes was 2nd in the 100m with a time of 14:70 and Charlotte Cummings recorded 33:50 in the 200m. Meanwhile, in the U15 girls Anna Smith recorded 13:50 to take 3rd place in the 100m and Caitlin Smith ran in both the 100 and 200m in the U17 age group recording times of 13:90 and 29:40 respectively. U15 sprinter Jason Rumley was 4th in 14:20 in the 100m whilst the older athletes Jordon Keenan (U17) and Scott Markwell (U20 competing in SM) both ran in the 100 and the 200. Their times were: Jordan: 12:70 and 26:70, Scott 11:90 and 24:20.

In the middle distances, Henry Johnson and Joe Armstrong claimed 2nd and 3rd places in the U13 800m with 2:25 and 2:32 respectively. In the U15 boys, Tom Goulding recorded a superb new PB of 2:23:10 for the 800m, taking 11 seconds of his best. Chris Peverley set a new PB in the U15 3000m when finishing 2nd in 9:53.6 whilst Callum Morgan also testing himself over the longer race finished 5th in 9:52. Finally, U20 athlete Owen McArdle competed in the Senior 400m and recorded a good season opener of 54:00.

In the field events U11 Katie Savory won two events including the long jump (3.50m) and the cricket ball throw. She threw 28.65m which was 9m further than her nearest rival. Daniel Jukes finished a creditable 4th in the U13 boys shot putt recording 4.71m. Finally, in the long jump Charlotte Cummings (U13 girls - 3.28), Anna Smith (U15 girls - 4.08m) and Jason Rumley (U15 boys - 4:03) all finished in 3rd spot and U20 Scot Markwell jumped one better to claim 2nd in the senior mens with 5.75m.

Seniors
On a weekend when illness and injury prevented the club for winning a potential medal at the National Road Relays, it was a rather busy race weekend.

Unavailable for the relays from the outset, Freya Murray managed to get herself to Ireland amid the volcanic ash disruption to successfully win the the Great Ireland 10km in 32:30, a frustrating 2 seconds outside of her best but ahead of Jo Pavey and Benita Willis. Meanwhile, triathlete Lisa Tweddle started her tri season with a sprint distance race in Skipton. Secretary James Raven also did a bit of biking finishing a creditable 15th in his Duathlon debut in a field of 110. James led the field home on the first 5km run before dropping back on the bike and then overtaking a further 6 competitors on the 2nd run.

Two of the team members disappointed not to race the relays found alternative races closer to home to highlight their current form. Tracy Laws tackled the Middlesbrough parkrun and finished 1st lady in a PB (10secs off previous time) of 17:16 whilst Max put on her track spikes to race the Shildon Memorial 3km and win in 10:09, equalling her PB.

Meanwhile, in Scotland, Sarah Wilkinson ran a solid 5km in 18:00 to win the Strathclyde Parkrun and Claire Simpson comfortably won the Wallsend multi-terrain 5 mile race in 30:14.

In her first race back, Claire Simpson produced a competitive and encouraging performance to win the ladies race in 37:40mins, 18 seconds clear of Morpeth’s Aiveen Fox. Lisa Tweddle was 9th in an excellent new PB time of 42:14 whilst super vet Sharon Parr finished 33rd (2nd in her age-group) in 49:01 helping the team to 2nd place overall. Meanwhile in the mens field, Matty Tomlinson finished in 9th spot recording 35:20.

Elswick Good Friday Races:

Juniors: Anna Fawcett and Chris Peverley both finished 2nd in the U13 girls 1.7 mile and U15 boys 2.4 mile races with times of 10:07 and 12:44 respectively. The U13 boys finished 2nd team with performances including a 3rd place finished by Tom Goulding (9:26), 9th place by Henry Johnson (10:09) and 22nd place by Rob Peverley (11:23). Callum Morgan running in the 2.4 mile U17 race finished in 8th place recording a time of 13:29.

Seniors: In the ladies 3.8km road race, Morag McDonnell led the Chester-le-Street team to 2rd place when finishing individually 2nd in 12:46, only 4-seconds shy of the leader. Angela Hunter was next home in 4th place 13:51 and Heather Robinson in 29th in 16:11. Although the men had an incomplete team for the four man relay, Matty Tomlison ran 12:59 handing over to Stevie Winter who recorded 14:18 and then to an unknown athlete on 3rd leg who recorded 12:32.

Isle of Man Athletics Festival:

After treating the Good Friday 10km (2nd in 36:18) and Saturday hill race (3rd place) as hard training runs, and following a 10 mile running pubcrawl, Emma Raven comfortable won the Easter Sunday 5km in a respectable 17:15 on a flat but windy promenade course. Meanwhile, club secretary James Raven ran the ½ Manx Mountain Marathon on the Saturday and finished in 9th position in 1:57:11, a 8-min course PB. On the Sunday, James ran 2nd leg of the 5km relay and over the same course as Emma, also ran 17:15!

Durham County Primary Schools Cross-Country

Willington, 19th March

The clubs’ youngest members enjoyed success at the county primary schools cross-country finals hosted by Parkside School earlier this month. The eight-strong squad proudly won two gold and two silver medals. In the youngest boys age group (Year 3&4) Nathan Fawcett led the field home in first place followed by Jonathon Langley in the silver medal position. Harry Lawrence was next to finish in a creditable 15th position and completing the quartet of boys, Max Rimmington ran well to finish in 46th. Rebecca Wood also tasted success by winning the Year 3&4 girls race whilst Amy Jack finished a superb 10th. The fourth medal came from Tom Cowperthwaite in the Year 5&6 boys who finished second. Finally, Rebecca Smith finished 41st in the competitive Year 5&6 girls race.

Liverpool Half Marathon

Nigel Brown competed in the Liverpool Half and despite a stiff headwind for the last 4 miles, he finished 77th overall and 16th in the M40 age group in a time of 1:24:51. This sets Nigel up nicely for the London Marathon in 4 weeks time.

Making her seasons debut, Lisa Tweddle finished a competitive 5th senior lady in a tough duathlon which comprised of a 5km run - 30km bike and - 5km run. Her total time was 1 hr 54mins 25 secs which was split into 20:32 for the first 5km, 1:08 for the bike and 23:39 for the final run.

NE Harrier League, Prudhoe

In the final match of the winter league, Anna Fawcett (U13), Angela Hunter (SW) and Chris Peverley (U15) all recorded the 2nd fastest times of the day in their respective races. Anna's time was 10:09 and she was followed home by Sarah Muarry in 25th place (14:53). Angela Hunter continuing her currently good run of form worked through the 3 min handicap and recorded 20:55. Chris's time was 13:11 whilst younger brother Robert Peverley finished 12th in 11:34 in the U13 boys race. In the U17 boys race, David Harris finished in 14th spot with 25:07 and in the Senior men's, slow pack runners David McGuckin and veteran Kenny Pyle were 224th and 247th respectively with times of 43:20 and 45:11.

World Cross, Wilmslow Half, Eastleigh 10km

World Cross Country Championships, Poland
Running in the biggest event of the global race calendar, Freya Murray finished a creditable 37th position and was 3rd British senior home, helping the team to a 6th place. However, Freya may be a little disappointed with her run after leading the UK contingent home at the intercounties.

Wilmslow Half Marathon
Aly Dixon posted a solid time of 74:03 finishing 3rd behind Michelle Ross-Cope and Rebecca Robinson whilst Angela Hibbs raced to a brilliant new PB of 77:15 finishing in 5th place. This was over a minute faster than her previous best!

Eastleigh Inter-Area 10km
Tracy Laws made the long trip to the south coast to race for the North of England over 10km. Tracy produced a superb new PB of 35:25 (chip) to finish 9th lady. During the race, Tracy also ran a 10-second PB to 5km of 17:12!

Emma Raven and Maxine Cznarnecka ended the cross-country season on a high by running for Scotland around the tough, undulating and twisty course at Berry Hill Park. Competing against teams from the other home nations, alongside teams from the English regions, Emma was 9th and 1st Scot home in 26:33 and Max was 11th in 27:08. Scotland were 3rd team overall by 1 point!

Error in Schools Results

English Schools, 20th March, Manchester.

There were two errors in the earlier results due to a problem on the day with chips not matching names and numbers. New results have been published and it seems our two Junior Boys did far better than we first thought.

Chris Peverley actually finished in an superb 27th position with 13:12; an improvement from 104th last year. Tom Goulding's performance was 125th place in 13:46. Their Durham team was 15th.

5-Time Northern 6-Stage Road Relays Champions

Wythenshaw Park, Manchester, 21st March

Spring finally arrived this weekend and on a breezy but sunny day in Manchester, Chester’s senior women’s squad well and truly emphasised their supremacy over the Northern athletics scene. With an almost perfect team performance, the sextet romped to victory with a huge winning margin of 8mins and 33seconds over Hallamshire (about 2km in distance terms!!).

Melissa Turner ran a competitive first leg recording a time of 16:58 to hand over to Maxine Cznarnecha in 5th place but within touching distance of the leaders. Maxine stormed off, took the lead after about 300m and from this point on, with the win never in much doubt, the emphasis turned to individual time-trialling and extending the lead. Max finished in 16:58 to hand over to Morag McDonnell. With the fastest team time of the day, Morag scorched round in 16:37 to claim the 2nd fastest time of the day overall (Hallamshire’s Hatti Dean who was also on 3rd leg ran the fastest lap of 16:08). With the lead now at nearly three minutes, Angela Hibbs raced the clock and began the process of lapping teams. Her time of 16:53 sets her up nicely for the Wilmslow half marathon next weekend. On leg five, Tracy Laws further extended the lead to over 6 minutes with a solid lap time of 17:02 handing over to Emma Raven who had the pleasant job of bringing the team home to a 5th consecutive Northern 6-Stage Road Relay title! Emma’s time of 16:44 was the 3rd fastest of the day behind Morag.

This week, James Raven won the 5km race around Middlesbrough Albert Park in a new PB time of 16:26 whilst Angela Hunter and Lisa Tweddle were the top two ladies at the Sunderland race. In wet conditions, Angela ran 18:28 and Lisa ran 21:18.

English Schools Cross Country Championships, Heaton Park, Manchester, 20th March

Representing Durham Schools, five of our Junior athletes competed well against large fields over a muddy, hilly course in Manchester. Helping the Junior Boys team to 9th place, Chris Peverley was 2nd counter finishing in an excellent 62nd position (13:51 mins) and Tom Goulding completed the team in a creditable 202nd in 14:37 mins. Junior Girl Anna Fawcett was 57th helping her team finish 7th overall. Anna finished in 10:47 mins, the same time as seven other finishers demonstrating the high level of competition in this event. Bethany Jones was the last counter in the Durham team in the Inter Girls race finishing in 228th place with 15:58 mins whilst Dylan Pickvance-Clarke recorded 17:45 mins to finish 88th overall and 2nd Durham counter in the Senior Girls age group.

NE Indoor Pentathlon Championships

Gateshead Indoor Arena, 14th March 2010

With the indoor centre at Gateshead only featuring a straight, the events included 60flat, 60m hurdles, long and high jump, and shot putt and not the traditional 800m at the end.

Joey Williams improved his total points score from last year by over 300 to win the U17 NE title setting an impressive 4 PB's on the way. Joey's results included 9:90sec for the 60m hurdles, 5.48m in the long jump, 9.55m in the shot, 1.66m in the high jump and 7:97sec in the flat 60m.

Meanwhile, in the girls U15 competition, Mia Hodgson continued her fine season taking silver place. Despite adding around 800 points to her total from the same event last year, she finished only 70 points away from the gold. Her performances included 3 PB's in the shot putt (5.94m, a 20cm improvement), high jump (1.48m) and the flat 60m (8.32sec). These are great results from both out multi-eventers!

Gateshead Indoor Series, 11th March

Katie Savory (U13), Mia Hodgson and Anna Smith (both U15), and Caitlin Smith (U17) were all in action in the indoor league competition at Gateshead stadium. Katie Savory was 9th in the 60m (9:51), and with a jump of 4:45m, was an excellent 2nd place in the long jump. Mia Hodgson recorded a double victory in the 60m hurdles (9:68) and the long jump where she set a new personal best of 4:73m. After 5 matches in the grand prix series, Mia is a clear leader in the U15 girls. Anna Smith finished 5th in the flat 60m with a time of 8:71secs and jumped 4:17m in the long jump. In the U17 age group Caitlin Smith ran a seasons best of 8:52 in the 60m finishing in 3rd position.

Intercounties Cross Country, Birmingham

Seniors: It was a golden early spring day for Freya Murray and the North East Women’s team at the climax of the domestic cross-country season. Freya was truly spectacular and after always being in the mix at the front of the race, she pulled away from Steph Twell to win by 9 seconds in 27:21! Awesome stuff!

Freya, who was running for Scotland East, was followed home by the North East team which included 3 ClS ladies. With all 9 NE team members finishing in the top 50, they easily won the team trophy. Melissa Turner was 3rd counter home in a excellent 25th position with 29:37 and was followed closely by Tracy Laws in 35th (29:56). Maxine Czarnecka completed the ClS quartet in 42nd place in a time of 30:21.

Juniors: The club had athletes representing the North East Counties in four of the junior races. With around 300 of the UK’s best runners in each race, our juniors should be proud of their finishing positions. In the U13 age group, Daniel Pickering finished in 65th position in the boys race (11:13) whilst Anna Fawcett finished in 83rd position with a time of 12:12 in the girls race. Chris Peverley was the 4th NE counter coming home in 118th (16:30) and Dyllan Pickavance-Clarke competing against a top quality U20 field finished in 80th in 25:41!

England U15 Combined Events Championships

Mia Hodgson produced five solid performances to finish 13th out of 27 in the U15 indoor pentathlon championships. Her performances included 5:56m in the shot putt, 4:21m in the long jump, 1:45m (equalling her PB) in the high jump, 9:53 secs in the 60m hurdles and 2:42 in the 800m to complete the set. Her total points score of 2508 was a PB, 116 points more than her score from earlier in the season.

Two superb team efforts ensured that Chester-le-Street's senior women continued to dominate the NE distance running scene after finishing 1st and 3rd in the NE relays on Saturday.

A-team: As expected the A-team ran away with victory after leading from the gun. Emma Raven was first off recording 11:57 around the two lap, 2.2 miles circuit and handing over to Morag McDonnell with a 40sec lead over the rivals. Morag, in her first race in 2010, extended the lead to 2 minutes with a time of 12:30. Also running a leg of 12:30, Maxine Czarnecha pushed the gap to 2nd team Morpeth to almost 4 minutes before passing onto Melissa Turner who blasted round in 12:15, the second fastest of the day. The team finished in 49.22, 4min 2sec ahead of 2nd place.

B-team: Angela Hunter produced another confident run to give the team an excellent start coming home in 12:41 and 4th place. Our youngest team member Dyllan Pickavance-Clarke dug in deep keeping the team in medal contention and completed her leg in 14.54. Next up was Lisa Tweddell who produced a battling performance to maintain a lead over chasing Sunderland running 14.52. Finally, Angela Hibbs, racing outside of her comfort zone and in the midst of high marathon mileage, ran strongly to record 12:29 and comfortably bring the team home 2 minutes ahead of 4th place and 1 minute 40 seconds behind 2nd. Unfortunately for the girls, the rules state only one set of medals per club, so the 4th placed team took the bronze.

Our female marathon training duo tested themselves out on the roads this weekend. Angela Hibbs was first home (male and female) in the 5km time-trial around town moor in 18:08 whilst Aly Dixon incorporated the Cupar 5 mile road race into a session recording a winning time of 27:37 (this was her 2nd rep of two 5 mile efforts - her first one was 28:06).

English National Cross-Country Championships

27th February, Roundhay Park Leeds.

In a field of over 500, Tracy Laws continued her excellent season with a run that placed her 26th. Her time for the 8km course including twice up Hill 60, was 30:04. Steph Twell won. Katy Blackett was the only other female competing and she finished in 336th place in the U15 girls. However, she was unfortunately disqualified.

The Junior Boys closed two full teams in the U13 and U17 age groups. The U13 North Eastern team champions battled the large fields well with the quartet of Tom Goulding (60th: 12:34), Joe Armstrong (203rd: 13:36), Robert Peverly (312th: 14:39) and Brandon Feely (321st: 15:33) finishing in 30th team position. The U17 mens team placed a little higher in 26th with Gareth Lavan leading them home in 143rd (23:00) followed by Calum Morgan (232nd: 24:32), Sam Blackett (269th: 25:19) and David Harris (289th: 26:12). Finally, two of the clubs regular competitors tested themselves out in the U15 boys race. Chris Peverley just missed a top 100 position finishing in 106th with a time of 15:33 whilst Andrew Sill worked hard and finished in 326th (17:39).

AVIVA U15 English Indoor Champs

27th-28th February, Birmingham Indoor Arena

Mia Hodgson reached the semi-finals of both the 60m flat and the 60m hurdles. She finished 6th in the flat event and was rewarded with a new PB time of 8:33 and narrowly missed the final of the hurdles finishing in 3rd with a time of 9:43 which was just outside of her PB from earlier in the season.

In the Senior Women's race, Claire Simpson and Angela Hunter had excellent runs to finish with the 2nd and 3rd fastest times of the day with actual times of 24:26 and 24:41 respectively. Along with Jane Mooney from Morpeth who ran 24:02, they set off with a 3 minute handicap and overtook most of the slow pack runners to finish overall 3rd and 6th. Anna Fawcett also defied a handicap in the U13 girls race to finish 3rd overall and 2nd fastest to Birtley rival Lydia Turner. Sarah Muarray also tested herself out in the U13 girls race finishing in 26th position.

Three senior men competed. Phil Coulson set off last in the fast pack but finished first ClS man in 64th overall with an actual time of 33:16. Nigel Brown finished 168th after starting with the medium pack (actual time of 38:25) whilst veteran athlete Kennie Pyle finished in 271st position with a time of 47:04.

At this stage the Junior Boys results are unavailable but from the results in the Chronicle, the top performances came in the U13 boys were ClS took the team award with Joe Armstrong finishing 2nd and Daniel Pickering 5th (there is no indication about which pack the boys started from).

Scottish & Welsh Cross Country Championships

Scottish Champs: Callendar Park, Falkirk

Chester-le-street's senior women dominated the front of the race with four finishing in the top nine. Unsurprisinginly, Freya Murray (running for home club Edinburgh) blasted round the frozen, hilly 8km course to win with considerable ease and claim her fourth National title in 27:41. Emma Raven, also representing her home club, Central AC, outsprinted fellow NE athlete Rosie Smith to take the silver medal in a time of 29:25. Next home in 6th place with 30:04 was Aly Dixon who is currently in tough marathon training. Aly was closely followed home by Maxine Czarnecha in 9th spot with 30:16. Althought the Chester quartet would have easily won the team title, only Scottish clubs are eligible and as such, Freya and Emma's teams battled it out for silver and bronze respectivley.

Welsh Champs: Swansea

Meanwhile, following his recent 10km PB, James Raven competed in the championship of his families homeland. He finished a superb 23rd position completing the testing 12km course in 42:48.

Gateshead Open Indoor Meeting

Mia Hodgson tackled three events and won them all. Although a little outside her best times in the 60m hurdles (9.8secs) and 60m flat (8.4secs), she equalled her PB of 1:45 in the high jump. Anna Smith finished 5th in the 60m flat in the U15 girls (8.7) whilst Caitlin Smith ran 8.6secs and also finished 5th in the U17 age group.

Joey Williams was also busy competing in the U17 men's age group. He finished 3rd in the 60m hurdles with 10.5 seconds, 2nd in the high jump with 1:55m and 3rd in the long jump 5:11m.

Parkrun and Harrier League

Newcastle Parkrun
Tracy Laws set a new 5km PB of 17:24 in the Newcastle Parkrun. Although this removed 20 seconds from her previous best, Tracy wasn't quite feeling 100% and she will no doubt remove even more time from this soon.

Wreckenton Harrier League
Three athletes tested themselves out in the handicapped NE league races. In the senior women's race, Angela Hunter started in the fast pack with a 3 minute handicap and worked her way through the field to an excellent 3rd place overall with an actual time of 26:40. U17 David Harris finished in 8th with a time of 28:31 and Nigel Brown finished 182nd in the senior mens with 44:25 after starting with the medium pack.

Inter-Area Schools Cross-Country, Meadowfield

Our Juniors were once again competing for places in the Durham team for the English schools. This time they were representing Durham schools in a match against the other NE areas in cross-country races around the foggy fields at Meadowfield.

Continuing his winning streak, Daniel Pickering stormed to victory in the minor boys age group, 10 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. In the age group above, Chris Peverley and Thomas Goulding finished in 3rd and 7th respectively with times of 16:22 and 16:40. The winner of this race recorded 16:13. In the senior boys Callum Morgan had a strong run finishing around the top half of the field.

In the Junior girls race, Anna Fawcett worked through the field to finish a superb 3rd place, 9 seconds away from Birtley’s winner Lydia Turner. Bethany Jones battled hard and finished a creditable 12th in 17:28 in the inter-girls race and gained the last selection spot for the English schools in the process. Finally Dyllan Pickavance-Clarke continuing her injury-comeback finished in 11th in 20:01 in the senior girls.

Once again sorry to those who finished outside of the top 15 that we may have missed – these results are unavailable.

Melissa Turner made the long trip to Alsager by Crewe to produce an excellent performance and finish 4th in a time of 28:11 for the 5 mile flat-fast course. Mel was 2 seconds away from 3rd place and held off the 5th place athlete by 1 second.

Dewsbury 10km

Taking advantage of the good weather conditions, Emma and James Raven both raced to PB's over 10km. James recorded 33:30 finishing in 21st position, whilst Emma took 3rd place in womens contest with a time of 34:47.

Durham Schools Cross-Country Champs

Many C-le-S athletes raced through the snow for their school region rather than the club. With results hard to obtain, only those listed in the Chronicle’s results section (i.e. top 8) are mentioned – sorry to those missed off.

Our top performer was Daniel Pickering who led the field home in 8:26, 14 seconds clear of the next Minor Boy. He also helped his Durham Central team to claim 2nd in the team competition. Another individual medal was won in the Junior Boys by Chris Peverley representing West Wear, who finished in 2nd place with a time of 16:24 for the 4.3km course. He was 6 seconds behind the winner. Following closely, Tom Goulding finished outside of the individual medals in 4th with 16:56 but led his team (Durham Central Schools) to gold.

It was excellent to see Dyllan Pickavance-Clarke back in action after a troublesome knee injury. Dyllan finished 5th in the Senior girls representing Derwentside. Finally, Anna Fawcett running for West Wear, finished in 4th place in the junior girls, just missing out on an individual medal but collecting a bronze in the team event.

Hopefully all these athletes will now gain selection to represent Durham in the English Schools Championships.

NE Harrier League, Town Moor

Six of our senior athletes competed in the 3rd race of the harrier league series. For the women, Angela Hunter produced a great performance setting off in the fast pack with a couple of minutes handicap over the main field. She nicely moved through most of 110 strong field to finish in 8th place overall and 4th fastest of the day (29:54). Lisa Tweddle also ran strongly finishing high up in 29th place overall with a time of 35:16.

A strong quartet of men took on the field of 319 athletes. First home was Richard Ellis in 10th (42:02). He was followed by Phil Coulson in 76th who set off in the medium pack (45.07), Stewy Bell from the fast pack (80th in 45:26) and also from the medium pack Nigel Brown in 171st (48:30). It is unclear from the results what the handicaps were for any of the races.

Mia Hodgson was back in action again this weekend - this time tackling the Scottish Indoor Pentathlon Champs; an open event! Mia finished a superb 3rd overall with a PB total of 2392. She was fastest over 60m hurdles with 9.40 which was just shy of her PB from last week; cleared 1:41 in the high jump; long jumped 4:17; and ran 2:52 for the 800m. (It is unclear what she threw in the shot putt).

Brass Monkey Half Marathon, York

Congratualtions to Phil Coulson who finished 2nd in the fast York course. His time of 1 hour 12 mins and 36 seconds was just outside his PB by 6 seconds. Meanwhile, running 10 seconds faster than his PB from last year, Keith Robertshaw finished 21st with a time of 1 hour 17 mins and 4 seconds. Well done guys!

Northern Cross Country Championships 2010

Through thick fog, a handful of Chester-le-Street athletes battled the hills and mud in the Northern Cross Country Champs. The day’s top placing came in the U13 boy’s race with Thomas Goulding finishing in an excellent 7th place, only 24 seconds behind the winner. Tom was quickly followed home by Daniel Pickering in 16th place (11:36) and completing the Chester trio was Robert Peverley who raced hard all the way to the finish with a time of 13:18 and 131st position. In the U15 boys race Chris Peverley finished a creditable 43rd in 14:41, whilst Andrew Sill finished in 193rd spot (17:50). Callum Morgan was the only U17 male and with a gutsy sprint finish, came home in 96th with a time of 17:50. Tackling the “teaspoon” hill and the “saucer” hill four times each, James Raven represented the senior men well finishing in the top 6th of the field in 106th with a time of 46:52.

Only three female athletes competed with Anna Fawcett finishing 14th in the U13 girls race over 3km. With only two senior women running, C-l-S were unable to retain the team title won at these championships when it was last run on the Blackburn course. Nevertheless, Tracy Laws continued her good run of form to finish 10th in 32.56 ahead of Maxine Czarnecha in 15th 33.30.

Newcastle and Sunderland Parkruns

Opting to race over 5km in Sunderland and Newcastle instead of the Northern Cross, Angela Hunter and Melissa Turner both won their respective Parkruns recording 19:03 and 17:13 respectively. Mel’s time was a PB.

Northern Indoor Championships, 16-17th January

Two athletes from Chester-le-street competed this weekend at the indoor track in Sheffield and both came away with gold medals. In the U15 girls, Mia Hodgson had her work cut out with a total of five sprint races on the first day of the championships. In the 60m hurdles, Mia cruised through the heats with a PB time of 9:56, ran even quicker in the semi-final recording 9:40 and raised her performance for a third time in the final to comfortably win in 9:38 seconds. In total, Mia knocked 0.4secs of her PB. In the flat 60m, she finished 2nd in her heat and just outside of her PB. Unfortunately, she was knocked out in the semi-final – no doubt by this stage in the day, Mia was feeling a little tired.

In contrast on day two, Emma Raven tackled the longest event of the championships, the senior women’s 3000m and won comfortably in a new indoor PB or 9:56.1.

Newcastle Park Run, 16th January

Angela Hibbs competed in the inaugural running of this weekly 5km race around Exhibition Park in Newcastle. She finished 1st senior lady in 18.38 minutes; the wind and some remaining ice on the route made times slower than normal.

Cardiff Cross Country, 17th January

After the bad weather before Christmas stopped Tracy Laws’s journey to Brussels, she finally won her first Northern Vest this weekend in the Cardiff Cross Country. Tracy finished 12th overall and 3rd North of England counter in a time of 22:57. The race was won by Hatti Dean in 21:16.

Indoor Action (Nov 09 - Jan 2010)

Mia Hodgson and Anna Smith both represented the club over 60m at two open indoor meetings in Gateshead. In the meeting on the 16th November 2009, both U15 girls ran PB's and won their individual races. Mia ran 8:36 and Anna ran 8:50. The following month at the meeting on the 17th December, Mia improved her time over 60m to 8:34, recording another win. Anna was 3rd in 8:61 on this occasion.

More recently, under 20 athlete Rob Patton also tested himself over 60m at the North East Indoor Champs - Gateshead, 10th January. Rob ran 7:41 in the heats to qualify for the final where he ran a strong 7:37 to finish 5th. This time was only 0.03 outside of his PB.

Well done to our sprinters!

BUPA Great Edinburgh International

Freya Murray set off in a determined manner over the multi-lap, snow-covered course at the foot of Arthur's seat. Despite dropping back a little as the race progressed, Freya battled hard to finish a solid eighth place behind four top Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes and the UK's top cross runners. She now leaves the snow behind for a three week warm-weather training trip with Scottish Athletics to South Africa!

Emma Raven was also due to start, but remained stuck at the bottom of a hill in her estate.

Ribble Valley 10km

27th December.

Whilst many races were cancelled due to the ice and snow across the country, the Ribble Valley 10km (featuring the Northern 10km Champs) went ahead and attracted top quality fields. James Raven produced a fine run to lower his PB by a further 32 seconds to 33:50. Emma Raven felt the effects of three days of Christmas and ill relatives but happily finished 6th in 36:12.

Highs and Lows of a Snowy Weekend: 19-20th Dec

19th December: Saltwell 10km

In truly treacherous conditions, Angela Hunter finished in 2nd place in the Saltwell 10km, 18 seconds behind Kim Simpson from Gateshead. It certainly wasn't a day for fast times, but Angela just sneaked under the 40 min mark recording 39:59.

20th December: Iris Lotto CrossCup, Brussels

Two of our athletes were due to compete in Brussels; one made it and one didn't. Racing through heavy snow that continued to fall during the race, Freya Murray finished an impressive 6th in this good quality international field.

Meanwhile, back in London, Tracy Laws and the rest of the North of England team were disappointed to learn that the Eurostar had shut down. So instead of racing, Tracy returned to the North East.

European Cross Country Championships, Dublin

Making her debut at these Championships, Freya Murray produced a superb run to finish 9th in the European Cross-Country Championships in Dublin. Hayley Yelling won the race from the gun. Freya was the next British athlete home, 37 seconds clear of the rest of the GB ladies. Together, the team won silver behind a strong Portuguese team. Well done Freya!

2009 North East Cross Country Championships, Darlington

Sprint finishes certainly kept the Chester-le-Street supporters gripped as our athletes came away with four individual medals and two team titles at the 2009 NE Cross-Country Championships. Top honours of the day went to Anna Fawcett and Chris Peverley who picked up silvers, and Thomas Goulding and Tracy Laws who claimed bronzes.

With the fog clearing, the day kicked off extremely well with our six U13 boys first round the flat, twisty course. Thomas Goulding led the team home to gold in third place in 12.29, closely followed by Daniel Pickering in 4th (12:41). Joe Armstrong was the third team counter in 14th spot (13:08). Brandon Feeley and Jake Hall battled together finishing one-second apart with Brandon in 27th place getting the better of his team-mate Jake in 28th. Robert Peverley completed the team line-up with 38th position.

The excitement continued as the U13 girls set off. Anna Fawcett had a tussle for 2nd place for most of the race. Coming into the home straight it looked like Anna’s taller rival would take 2nd but Anna produced a gutsy sprint finish leaving her rival 3 seconds behind at the finishing line with a time of 12.54. Fellow Chester athlete Anna Oliver also worked hard in the finishing straight coming home in 26th position.

Our third individual medal was also secured in the closing stages of the U15 boys race with Chris Peverley easing clear of 3rd place to claim silver in 14:21, only 6 seconds from the winner. Andrew Sill who ran well through some of the muddier sections of the course, finished in 30th. In the U15 girls race, our sole competitor Katy Blackett looked strong up the course inclines near the finish to place 25th in 19:37.

Five U17 boys took on the course at the end of the day when the course had been cut up by the preceding races. L. McCourt was the highest C-le-S finisher in a creditable 6th in 21:43. He was well supported by Gareth Lavan in 14th (22:27), Calum Morgan in 29th (24:00), Sam Blackett in 32nd (24:34) and David Harris in 34th (25:05). The boys team finished in a commendable 6th place.

In the longest and largest race of the day, a quartet of C-le-S men completed the 4-lap race. Producing a confident and strong run, James Raven was first home in 24th place (43:04) with Stewy Bell (37th in 43:04), Andrew Coffer (70th in 46:47) and Richard Ellis (85th 47:46) all working hard.

The final medals of the day came in the Senior Women’s race with yet another individual medal clinched in the finishing straight. This time, top honours went to Tracy Laws in 3rd place (32.56) who looks forward to her debut for the North of England next weekend in Brussels. Backed up by Melissa Turner in 5th (33:17) and Maxine Czarnecka in 9th (34:08), as expected, the women easily won the team title. Finishing halfway through the field, improving veteran athlete Alison Moore, steadily worked through the field finishing in 44th position.

East District Cross Country Championships, Livingston

Emma Raven finish 3rd in the Scottish East Champs over a testing, hilly and muddy course to improve on her 15th position in 2008.

Running for her Scottish club Central AC, she also led her team home to silver medals.

In a uniquely handicapped race, based on age and sex, Lisa Tweddle finished 1st senior lady and 48th position overall in an actual time of 39.38. There were over 100finishers.

Norman Woodcock Memorial 5 Mile and Santa Dash

Norman Woodcock 5 mile: 5th December 2009

Angela Hibbs defended her 2007 title (cancelled in 2008) finishing first lady in a time of 28:58, 23 seconds ahead of the 2nd placed lady whilst a Chester-le-Street men’s team finished a creditable 7th out of 15. First home was Matty Tomlinson in 22nd position (28:20) followed by Andrew Coffer in 27th (29:17). Next home for the club was Kennie Pyle in 37:37, with J Elsender completing the Chester quartet, a little further down the field.

Santa Dash: 6th December 2009

Following her success on the Saturday, Angela "Santa" Hibbs, donned her Santa outfit to run 4km around Town Moor in Newcastle and defend her Santa Dash women’s title.

This race incorporated the Northern 10 mile road-running championships. Claire Simpson finished 2nd lady in 59:10, which meant Claire also took the north of england Silver championship medal as well as running a pb. A couple of places in front was Keith Robertshaw in 59:02. Angela Hunter finished a little further down the field in her first race of the winter season.

McCain Cross-Country, Liverpool: Inc. European Trials

Freya Murray started her cross-country season in style finishing second at the European trial over 8km. She was 11 seconds behind Hayley Yelling and should now easily gain selection for the European Cross Champs in Dublin.

North East Harrier League at Farringdon

Some superb team packing in the U13 boys race saw Tom Goulden and Daniel Pickering race through to 24th and 25th from the fastpack with only three seconds separating them and only one fastpack athlete ahead of them. Brandon Feely and Robert Peverley were also only three seconds apart in 29th and 31st. In a competitive team event, the boys team finished 4th.

Chris Peverley recorded a fine 2nd placing (4th fastest on the day) in the U15 boys race and will move up to the fastpack in the next race. Chris was followed home by Andrew Sill in 25th place and Craig Roberts (from the fastpack) in 29th to help the boys place third team. The U17 men were also third team with Callum Morgan first home for the club in 12th, Sam Blackett in 18th closely followed by David Harris in 19th.

In a field of 360, four of our men battled through from the medium (2:30 min handicap) and fastpacks (5 min handicap). David Old was first home in 71st (34:52 from M), Phil Coulson was 95th (35:35 from M), Stewy Bell in 167th (37:09 from F) and Nigel Brown was 187 (37:51 from M).

Only four female club members competed. In the U13 girls, Anna Fawcett finished 2nd from the fastpack and hence Anna was 2nd fastest on the day. Together with Hannah Martin in 10th and Sarah Murray in 25th, the girls finished 3rd team. Katy Blackett was the sole representative in the U15 girls and set off with a tough handicap in the fastpack. She worked her way through some of the field finishing in 25th.

Chester Ladies dominated the team event for the 3rd consecutive year, thanks to 3 outstanding PB performances. Emma Raven crossed the line in 4th place with a superb time of 35 mins 16 secs an improvement of around 60 secs,Tracy Laws in 5th place recorded 35 mins 30 secs to improve her figures by 32 secs and Maxine Czarnecka in 7th place removed 22 secs from her best with a fine 35 mins 47 secs.
Also recording a pb by 43secs was James Raven finishing in a fantastic 34:22.
